Román The Map of Love egyptskej spisovateľky Ahdaf Soueif sa v roku 1999 dostal medzi finalistov na Man Bookerovu cenu, a veru zaslúžene.

Američanka a novinárka?

"I walk through a village humming with normal life. The small store spills its bluish light on the dust road, two men sit with their nargiles in front of the counter, children play at the edge of the light. But somewhere out there I know there are men, young men, unresigned, who boil with anger and swear to avenge their villages and their people. When I think of them my blood runs cold and I clench my fists in the pockets of my coat, bow my head and hurry quickly home."

"What difference do a hundred years - or a continent - make?"

"It does seem strange to me that I have not met someone like her before, in my now not inconsiderable sojourn here. We tend to meet our own countrymen and the members of the other Consulates - and the only Natives we have to do with are the ones who serve us. I fancy it is somewhat like coming to England and meeting the servants and shopkeepers and forming your ideas of English society upon that." (z listu Anny Winterbourne zo 14. marca 1901)

Je to aj príbeh egyptskej histórie, šejkov a tajomného magična nočnej Sinajskej púšte, príbeh snahy prispôsobiť sa kultúre, v ktorej sme sa rozhodli žiť ("We are, after all, in their country"), ale predovšetkým príbeh o tom, ako dokáže politická situácia zatieniť život obyčajných ľudí, v ktorom jeden Egypťan hovorí inému: "What I want you to understand is that abducting - or in any way harming - ordinary people is never an act of heroism.". Svet, o ktorom rozprávajú Annine denníky zo začiatku storočia, moderná Američanka v Káhire a Amal, ktorá v Egypte prežila celý život.

"They tell me horrid things," Amal says after the siesta. "They say they just round people up in the mornings. Ordinary people going to work. They have their IDs and everything but they round them up anyway. And you can spend five days in the hold till they decide you´re not the one they want. And it´s not a holiday in there: they beat them and they... They say if the police go looking for someone and they don´t find him, they take his women: his wife, his sister, his mother, whatever. And they hold them till he gives himself up. And the men won´t stand for that and what starts out as one case ends up being a vendetta between the police and the whole village."

Isabel had nothing to say. Arrest warrants. You have the right to remain silent - nothing of what she knows holds here.

"It´s all going wrong," says Amal. "Someone robbed a jeweller´s shop and the jeweller was a Copt and they say the Islamic militants say it´s all right to rob a Copt to fund the jihad, and so the whole thing turns into a "sectarian" issue. But people - ordinary people - don´t believe it´s OK to rob a Copt, but then the Americans - I´m sorry..."

"It´s OK," Isabel says. "Tell me."

"Well, they´re trying to pass some bill through Congress about their duty to protect the Christian minority in Egypt, and of course that´s the game the British played a hundred years ago and people know that. It just stirs up bad feeling."

Pohľad, ktorý vete "There is a living world which people are refusing to see or even hear about" dáva veľmi aktuálny rozmer.

"It can´t be that bad. Surely it can´t be that bad. There must be a way, only we can´t see it yet. A way of making a space for ourselves - we just can´t quite see it yet. But things move on and by the time you´ve plotted your position the world around you has changed and you´re running - panting - to catch up. How can you think clearly when you´re running? That is the beauty of the past; there it lies on the table: journals, pictures, a candle-glass, a few books of history. You leave it and come back to it and it waits for you - unchanged. You can turn back the pages, look again at the beginning. You can leaf forward and know the end. And you tell the story that they, the people who lived it, could only tell in part."
